International alternative networks are believed to be non-commercial entities that are able to keep pace with improvements in the quality of information and media within their countries. They are not imperialist structures that are internally directed. They are independent, non-commercial options that are trying to bring multimedia into the 21st century. They began in the 1990s. Today, they include many forms of media such as video tutorials and news websites. Many of them have evolved to be multinational companies and are a crucial part of any democratic media strategies.

Despite the fact that these organizations differ in size their focus and location they are all united by a noncommercial philosophy and opposition to imperialist power systems. They spread their ideas by organizing information and communication reform campaigns and advocating an inclusive and egalitarian Internet. They also develop new networks of communication that facilitate local, regional and global developments in relation to social movements.

The strength of these networks is built in cooperation, and through the organization of campaigns for social movements and media reform initiatives that adapt information and communication to the benefit of everyone. They are creating a complicated network of transnational, local-local (especially south-south) regional, and other links that avoid the old colonial power dynamics and linkages between north and south.
